Nurturing the Land and Community: Steven Grieve’s Approach to Farming Automation
translate

In the gentle hills of southeast Scotland, near the charming town of North Berwick, Steven Grieve has carved out a niche for himself and his business, GPS and Guidance Solutions. With a background rooted in farming, Steven spends his days outfitting auto steer systems on tractors and coaching farmers in making the technology work for them. Steven’s story is one that intertwines innovation, community spirit, and a deep-rooted love for agriculture.

Growing up on his grandfather's smallholding, Steven learned the ins and outs of farming from an early age. The lessons he absorbed while working the fields shaped his understanding of the land and the machinery that helps cultivate it. After attending agricultural college, he spent time in his father's gardening business, where he developed a knack for operating various types of equipment. It was during these years that he realized how technology could make life easier for farmers.

A Genuine Approach to Technology

When Steven launched GPS and Guidance Solutions, he didn’t just want to be another reseller of agricultural equipment. His goal was to genuinely serve the farming community by providing tools that could help them thrive. Specializing in the Sveaverken F100 Auto Steer System, Steven focuses on making this technology accessible and beneficial for local farmers.

“Older-generation farmers may be a bit more reluctant about new tech,” Steven explains. “But once they see how it can save them time and effort, they start to embrace it.” He emphasizes that his role goes beyond selling equipment; he’s there to support farmers through the learning curve that comes with adopting new tools.

Richard Dove from Dove Farms, who has featured Steven’s work on his YouTube channel, appreciates this approach. Richard shares how his team is pleased with the performance of the Sveaverken F100 Auto Steer System: “It makes our jobs a lot easier. We’re able to be more efficient without sacrificing quality.” With Steven’s support and the reassurance that he’s just a phone call away, farmers like Richard enjoy added peace of mind alongside the quick 20-minute installation and precise drilling. For those who may be overwhelmed by traditional methods but are eager to modernize, Steven makes automating tractor operation less daunting.

Navigating Challenges Together

Scottish farmers face numerous challenges today, from unpredictable weather patterns to rising costs and labor shortages. Climate change has made farming increasingly difficult, with flooding and drought affecting crop yields. Agriculture plays a dual role as both a contributor to climate change and one of its victims, complicating the landscape for farmers who must adapt their practices while striving for profitability.

The Agriculture and Rural Communities (Scotland) Bill, introduced in September 2023 and became an Act in July 2024, aims to address some of these issues by promoting sustainable farming practices that align with environmental goals

Steven understands these challenges firsthand, “It can be quite harsh. It can be hard work, long hours.” He often discusses the hardships of agriculture with his clients and works to provide solutions that fit their specific needs. Farmers do their best to adapt. “I want farmers to feel confident using these tools,” he says. “It’s about making their lives easier so they can focus on what they love, which is farming.”

Joe Seels, another farmer who documents his experiences on YouTube, echoes this sentiment in a video showcasing his use of the F100 system

Steven envisions a future where automation seamlessly integrates into everyday farming practices—a future where farmers can manage multiple machines from the comfort of their offices while still maintaining hands-on control when needed. “In 15 or 20 years,” he predicts, “I can see farmers operating three automated machines in a field.”

Building Community Connections

Beyond his business efforts, Steven is deeply committed to giving back to his community. He played a key role in developing the North Berwick Trust Country Park, a 30-acre wildlife area designed for education and engagement. The park features an orchard, bee hives, and a plethora of trees native to Scotland and the UK—all aimed at promoting biodiversity.

The park project exemplifies Steven’s belief in sustainability and environmental stewardship: “I want people to connect with nature,” Steven shares. “It’s important for us as a community to understand our environment.” At the park, educational programs empower local residents to learn about sustainable practices and wildlife conservation, fostering a deeper appreciation for biodiversity. This initiative aligns perfectly with proposals set out in the Scottish Environment LINK report Farm for Scotland’s Future: The Case for Change, which advocates for practices that enhance ecological health while supporting local communities.

Steven's friendly demeanor makes him a beloved figure in the community. Farmers quickly feel a connection with the heart behind GPS and Guidance Solutions, knowing they can turn to him not just for technical support but also for guidance in navigating modern agriculture. His genuine commitment to helping them shines through in every interaction.

Steven may not wear a cape, but he is nothing short of a neighbourhood hero. Through GPS and Guidance Solutions, he champions innovation while nurturing the bonds that hold his community together. His story is one of resilience, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to making farming better for everyone.
